Symptoms of pulmonary embolism usually occur suddenly. The disease gives often symptoms of other organs assuming specific „guise”.
A case report
. The 29-year-old woman was admitted to the surgical ward because of the sudden appearance of pain located in the right side around her ribs radiating to the right shoulder, without fever, nausea and vomiting, and without any symptoms of respiratory disease. In the course of diagnostic tests it was found a significant increase in the concentration of D dimers and the widespread presence of thrombi in all the arteries of the lower lobe of the right lung in a computer tomographic examination of the chest with contrast. The diagnosis of pulmonary embolism caused the necessity of administering low molecular weight heparin, which resulted in relief of pain in the right side around her ribs and abdomen. Due to the good general condition of the patient further treatment and control was recommended on an outpatient basis.
Conclusions
. The „abdominal” guise of pulmonary embolism, which was found in the patient, indicates the need for vigilance in the diagnostic process.
