Infectious diseases, often occurring epidemically, are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in many countries around the world. On the basis of available reports and descriptions at the disposal of the State Sanitary Inspection, it was possible to analyze the ways of combating infectious diseases in Poland in 1918-2018. It has been shown that the introduced principles of therapeutic, epidemic and preventive treatment have resulted in the expected effects of a reduction in the morbidity and mortality in the country, comparable to other regions of Europe. The most convincing data concern mortality due to tuberculosis, which in 1950 amounted to 100.5 / 100,000 citizens, and since 2015, this index is 1.4 / 100,000. In turn, epidemics of smallpox and poliomyelitis, followed by the introduction of compulsory vaccination against them have enabled complete eradication of diseases. A similar pattern was observed with reference to measles, which was virtually eliminated thanks to vaccination. However, in the last 3 years, as in the whole of Europe, there has been an increase in the number of new cases. Also, infections of the digestive tract in the form of typhoid and paratyphoid fever, and dysentery have passed into history in Poland. The occurrence of venereal diseases – syphilis and gonorrhea – thanks to the introduced legal restrictions, managed to be leveled to the European level. The presented data illustrate the scale of occurrence of infectious diseases and the effectiveness of the measures introduced.
