Current Corona virus threat – 2019-nCoV

In December 2019, the new 2019-nCoV coronavirus caused fatal illnesses in China in Wuhan. The disease was called COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019). The new virus strain is phylogenetically similar to SARS-CoV and can be transmitted by horseshoe bats. However, the interaction of the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the virus glycoprotein spike with the host receptor, which is the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE-2), may cause snakes, turtles and pangolins to become an intermediate link in the spread of infection on people. In addition, the virus has tropism to human respiratory tract epithelial cells. The virus incubation period lasts from 2-4 to 21 days. The main symptoms of infection are fever (98%), cough (76%), shortness of breath (55%), muscle pain and fatigue (44%). In the next step, severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) occur. Diagnosis of infection boils down to detecting the most stable sections of the virus – nucleocapsid (N) and envelope (E) genes. In clinical evaluation, the most useful is chest computer examination, which illustrates the degree of pulmonary parenchymal involvement. Isolation and prevention are the main steps to reduce the spread of 2019-nCoV infection. Preparations with previously demonstrated antiviral activity are used in the treatment, including interferon-alpha, lopinavir-ritonavir, ribavirin and fabiravirin, remdesivir, chloroquine, as well as Chinese medicine preparation – ShuFengJieDu and Lianhuaqingwen. By 04/03/2020, 93,090 people in 76 countries were suffering from COVID-19, and 2,984 people in China and 214 in other countries had died.
