Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is one of the most difficult problems of contemporary orthopaedics and physiotherapy. A tendency for progression of scoliosis, and failure of many conservative treatment methods stimulated a search for new and more effective methods which will not only stop a progress of the deformation, but actually correct it. The FED method was created by Professor Santos Sastre Fernandez from the University of Barcelona. It is described as a threedimensional stabilisation of the spine with its simultaneous extension and derotation. It is a relatively new but promising method used for conservative treatment of IS. In Poland, it has been used since 2010. The elementary components of the FED method include the functional examination of a patient and an analysis of radiological images, physical preparation (electrostimulation and thermotherapy) of the patient, therapy in a special FED device, and analytic kinesiotherapy. The treatment method proposed by Professor Sastre is based mainly on the use of a special device, which enables corrective forces to act at a level of the scoliotic curve. The force intensity is controlled by an innovative computer programme, which can also be used for recording of all treatment variables. These forces focus on stabilising, stretching and derotation of the spine. The FED method was created for treatment of scolioses and round back in children, youth and adults. It was developed on a basis of long-term thorough evaluations and analyses.
